Union Thunder Junior Hockey is building the foundation to go full stride into their season opener versus the NJ 87s on 9/18 at Jersey Shore Arena. It is not only a divisional matchup, but also a battle of North versus South Jersey! The Thunder’s home opener is shortly after, on 10/1 against another divisional opponent, and fellow expansion team, the PA Huntsmen.
To be ready for the upcoming challenge of the EHL Premier league, the Thunder are taking advantage of their facilities at Union Sports Arena. The preparation is not limited to the ice available to the team during the summer months. It also includes a brand new training facility, on site, to develop players off the ice just as much on the ice.
In addition to the season and home openers early in the season, the Thunder will also be hitting the road on the weekend of 9/24 to attend the prestigious EHL Showcase in Worcester Massachusetts. The EHL Showcases are a league wide event attended by all EHL and EHLp teams, as well as scouts of NCAA D3 colleges and other junior leagues. The Thunder are matched up against the 3 previous EHLp Champions at this showcase. Head Coach Sam Tafel was recently interviewed by Associate Commissioner Neil Ravin and asked what his thoughts were about seeing those 3 teams so early in the season, his response was “we don’t run from challenge, we run to it”.
